As a long-time member of the community, the Institute Site has established
excellent cooperative working relationships with local authorities, health and
environmental concerns and educational institutions at all levels. Bayer
CropScience representatives meet routinely in open forums with plant neighbors,
community responders, industry representatives and others to discuss issues of
mutual interest, including safety and environmental protection.
The Institute Site has become a model for government, industry and community
groups across the nation. The site led the Worst Case Scenario communications
initiatives that formed the basis for the EPA's Risk Management Planning
regulations.
Employee volunteers serve as Ambassadors making direct contact with plant
neighbors and students through:
-
The Wally Wise Guy program for teaching shelter-in-place safety.
-
The Chemistry Connection program which teaches science and chemistry to
elementary school-age students.
-
Career presentations highlighting the various occupations at the site.
-
Plant tours and scheduled open house visits.
-
Science fair and Forensic tournament judging.
-
Various community and public service activities.

Additionally, tens of thousands of dollars are contributed by the Bayer
Institute Site to worthwhile programs and organizations in the Kanawha Valley.
Educational, charitable and cultural organizations benefit from these Institute
Site donations and improve the quality of life of the Kanawha Valley and West
Virginia.
